Scharounaquarium

                                                                        draft model                                                                                                                                                      final model

legend: orange elements represent levels in the building and grey balls represent people.
Model developed together with Elizaveta Mozalevskaya.

Scharounaquarium is a semiotic reflecion of Hans Scharoun’s Public Library Berlin.

In Shraoun’s reading space you will see no vertical separators.
None at all!
Isn't it pleasant to sit in the corner of a room and feel safe because you can see the whole place? Well, one can feel like that at every single point in this building.

There are several levels on top of each other, but almost all are visible. Here you won’t only master the horizontal, but the vertical, too. Partly because of this, but also because of the magnitude of the void, any irregular level around seems to be part of a singularity.

Strangely enough, due to the scale, walking here is like walking in an urban square; except it is silent. A vast, tranquil space...
Walking around turns into floating through. Just like in an aquarium, everyone is everywhere.

You don’t feel gravity anymore. Movement is constant.
And wherever you look.
